USC School of Law announces 2015 Compleat Lawyer Award recipients
April 4th, 2015

Nine alumni from the School of Law at the University of South Carolina have been named recipients of the 2015 Compleat Lawyer Awards.

Established in 1992, the Compleat Lawyer Award is the School of Law’s highest recognition of professional achievement and civic leadership by the school’s alumni. Because award recipients are nominated by other lawyers and selected by a panel of leaders from the state court and state bar, the Compleat Lawyer Award is considered one of the most prestigious awards that any graduate can receive.

“This year’s recipients join a long line of distinguished alumni who have been recognized for their service to the profession as well as to the public,” said USC Law School Dean Robert Wilcox. “They have made names for themselves at firms both small and large as entrepreneurs, as stewards of the environment, as protectors of our families and as defenders of our liberties. We are proud to call each one a Compleat Lawyer.”

The awards are given in three categories based on years in practice: Platinum (31 years or more), Gold (16 to 30 years) and Silver (15 years or less). The award recipients will be recognized at the USC School of Law’s annual alumni dinner April 30 at the Capstone Conference Center.

This year’s Compleat Lawyer Award recipients are:

Platinum awards: 1974 alumnus Lawrence “Larry” E. Flynn, Jr., Pope Zeigler in Spartanburg; 1977 alumna Alice F. Paylor, Rosen Hagood in Charleston; and 1978 alumnus Stuart M. Andrews, Jr., Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough in Columbia.

Gold awards: 1984 alumnus Mark D. Chappell, Chappell, Smith & Arden in Columbia; 1994 alumna Natalie Parker Bluestein, Bluestein & Douglas in Charleston; and 1996 alumnus Kirby D. Shealy, III, Adams and Reese in Columbia.

Silver awards: 2002 alumna Amy Armstrong, South Carolina Environmental Law Project in Georgetown; 2002 alumna Ayesha T. Washington, The Washington Law Firm in Charleston; and 2005 alumnus Blake Hewitt, Bluestein Nichols Thompson Delgado in Columbia.

Compleat Lawyer Award recipients are nominated by alumni, members of the profession, and others in the community, and are chosen by a committee comprising the chief justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, the chief judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals, the president of the South Carolina Bar, the USC School of Law’s dean and the co-chair of the Law School Alumni Council.
