Waste dump closed

The Safety-Kleen hazardous waste landfill near the shore of Lake Marion will shut down Monday after a federal panel rejected the company's last-ditch attempt to stay open.
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control and Santee Cooper hailed the decision, saying it signals the end of the landfill that accepts toxic waste from other states. "They're out of capacity, and it's time to close the gate," said Carl Roberts, attorney for DHEC. Environmental attorneys predicted their decade-long battle against the landfill may soon be over. For years, they have feared the potential for leaks of toxic chemicals from the landfill into Lake Marion.
