Coastal Conservation League wants in on Isle of Palms 'sea wall' case

An environmental group is seeking to intervene in the fight between a beachfront homeowner and the state over a buried wall the homeowner put in to keep the sea back.

The Coastal Conservation League, represented by the South Carolina Environmental Law Project, filed a motion March 26 seeking to intervene in the sea wall case between the Department of Health and Environmental Control and Isle of Palms residents Rom and Renee Reddy.

Faith Rivers James, executive director of the Coastal Conservation League, said the group wants to uphold the state’s ban on new sea walls and other hard erosion structures outlined in the Beachfront Management Act from 1988.

The Coastal Conservation League is a nonprofit working to protect the state's natural resources. Emily Cedzo, director of conservation programs and policy for the organization, said the League will intervene in litigation when the outcomes of a lawsuit could impact other parties not directly involved in the suit.
