GARDEN CITY BEACH — Lights, surveillance cameras and potential legal action.

That's the scene from Georgetown County beaches, where a showdown between homeowners and supporters of endangered sea turtles over a lighting ordinance is resulting in final warnings and possible fines of up to $100 per day. But now questions about enforcement may force county leaders to revisit the issue.

The ordinance was the basis for the April 9 letters sent from the S.C. Environmental Law Project (SCELP) to property management companies representing rental homeowners along the Waccamaw Neck, a hotbed for sea turtle activity. Despite receiving some positive responses, there are continued reports of non-compliant dwellings and unresponsive owners.
