AYNOR — The Waccamaw Tribe, formally known as the Waccamaw Indian People, has passed a measure officially recognizing the Rights of Nature — making the tribe the first governmental body in South Carolina to do so, joining a growing global movement.

The Aug. 7 resolution extends four individual rights to the Yadkin-Pee Dee Watershed and its surrounding forests, wetlands, native plants and wildlife: the right to exist, flourish and regenerate; the right to be free of contamination; the right to restoration; and the right to be respected as a living community.
