Jasper County – the fastest-growing county in the United States – is also now the state's most vulnerable for wetland loss. When the County Council rezoned 265 acres – 60 acres of which are wetlands – of "Rural Conservation" land to "Resource Extraction," SCELP filed suit on behalf of the Coastal Conservation League to hold the County accountable to its own Comprehensive Plan and state law.

The ACE Basin – one of the largest intact estuarine ecosystems on the Atlantic Coast – is the setting for this challenge to a private vehicular bridge permit. When DES denied the permit, concluding the bridge would harm this protected coastal landscape, the developer appealed. SCELP intervened on behalf of the Coastal Conservation League to defend that decision.

On behalf of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition, SCELP is defending Beaufort County's Cultural Protection Overlay against a developer's sustained legal campaign to build a private golf resort on St. Helena Island. Now fighting on two simultaneous legal fronts, we remain committed to protecting the Gullah/Geechee people, culture and the community-driven zoning that safeguards St. Helena.
